I am reading an awesome book;
The premise that games are good for me appealed heavily to the geek in me, so this was a must-buy. I have always taken video games far too seriously. I thought that, perhaps, this book might help me justify that. I don’t think it has, but I do feel better about some of the stupid games I’ve gotten addicted to, in the past. The first third of the book was a mix of statistics and a wonderful look at the value of video games. A few games got special attention, and the reasons that they are so popular/addictive was explained with simple, yet eye-opening explanations.
I was ready to sing the book’s praises after this section… but today, I started the next section, which delves into using games to make reality better. Making a game out of the mundane AND the important parts of life… to make them easier to deal with, more effective and simply more fun. There was a whole section dedicated to education and the use of gaming and games to teach; I bought this to help me justify my at-home gaming addiction, and now I’m getting excited about my experiential education work, while I’m reading it! It even referenced New Games, my favorite out-of-print games book.
If the book keeps moving at this pace, I totally expect it to hold the key to fixing all of civilization’s problems, in about 150 more pages. It’s called Reality is Broken … and I can’t wait to finish it. I highly recommend it, especially if you’re someone into experiential/adventure education or gaming or being happy.
