I made the mistake of commenting on a hot topic on the UMASS band alumni group on facebook about the new, incoming band director. I call it a mistake, because I gave my contribution and have very little else to say… yet, I get an eMail, everytime someone else responds to the same topic. I’m only slightly interested in what they have to say. I may have to find a way to turn off that notification. The problem is that most of the responses are from people who seem to be more caught up in the “style” and traditions of the UMASS band, that probably had a lot to do with the former director, than whether or not this new director is any good. If the percussion director, who was acting as interim director, wanted the position and was denied it, or leaves the school because of the new director, or because he didn’t get the director position, himself, I might be as upset as some of the people who are annoying me, now. His part of the program was the reason I chose UMASS… and while it wasn’t everything I dreamed it would be, it was a great experience. I was proud to be part of the “Power and Class of New England.” I was more proud to be a part of Thom’s drumline… and I might be even more proud of the 72 point word I just played in Words with Friends.
